I’m dating myself with this analogy but he reminds me of Pat Toomey. He was a hardliner in the House for a few terms, challenged Arlen Spectre from the right in the primary in 2004 and then was at the Club for Growth. He ran again for senator in 2010 and was a weak candidate by any measure. Luckily for him the national environment was very red and there was a stronger Republican running for governor. He won by 1 point.
I know the thermostatic reaction works against Democrats too, but it always seems so much more extreme with Republicans.
Election N: Oh I like those Republican ideas, they make sense...
Election N+1: On no, Republicans were terrible! I guess I should vote for the Democrats.
Election N+2:Oh I like those Republican ideas, they make sense...
Election N+3: Republicans were terrible again! Who could have imagined? Guess I have to vote for the Dems.
Election N+4: You know, those Republicans, their simple solutions make a lot of sense.
