I've also started a Substack with a somewhat related goal which is to try to raise awareness of other perspectives in a non-partisan manner by synthesizing the arguments made across ~100 podcasts spanning the ideological spectrum, using AI. I love your work and wish you would realize how much better you are than Matt Iglesias. I have never seen him do anything in good faith and you debates would be so much better with an honest broker.
You ask "what we owe people", but that's already a little off track or misleading. Nobody ever owes anybody anything in a universal or "metaphysical" sense. It all comes back to what you're willing to give to someone in exchange for something back.
We "owe" people whatever it takes to get them to give us what we need from them. And perhaps we also "owe" people enough grace to garner enough good will that they are likely to show us the same grace if they end up in a position of power over us.

There's about a thousand language and culture variations of the same saying:
Do not do unto others that which you would not wish having done unto you.
So it's not that complex a concept.
