Next week marks one year since The Argument was born. The very first thing we published was an essay of mine called “How do we live with each other?“ It asked the question at the heart of this magazine.
Well-meaning people disagree profoundly on the best way to live. Some of them think you should get married and have children by 22. Others think religion is a poison. Still others believe that eating a hamburger is a grave sin.
These people are often illegible to one another.
So how do we build a society together amid all that disagreement? That is the work of liberalism and is therefore the work of The Argument.
To mark our first anniversary, we’re returning to that founding question with a series about what we owe people whose beliefs and choices we may find difficult to accept or even understand.
Our first piece in this series came out today. In “I don’t need you to believe I’m a woman,” Cassie Pritchard argued that trans rights cannot depend on persuading everyone to share the same beliefs about gender.
Over the next six weeks, we’re going to be publishing writers you know and love — like Kelsey Piper and Matthew Yglesias — as well as some new voices — like Julian Brave Noisecat and Dylan Matthews — all wrestling with this fundamental question.
