Perhaps what bothers me the most about all this extremely naive classic-philosophical cosplay is how thinly-veiled the craving to participate in it is as a proxy for a deeper meaning-providing cultural worldview. The Christianity both Rubio and Vance espouse is plainly no longer normative, and instead of simply accepting that, they both crave roles as contemporary heirs to Hamilton/Madison/Jefferson in ushering forth a new ideology into political reality.

The difference of course is that Hamilton/Madison/Jefferson were languishing under the tyrannic English monarchy, whereas Rubio/Vance evangelize a spiritual need in search of a problem.

Those direct-descendant Greeks were among those targeted by the Immigration Act of 1924 because (from Wikipedia), they "arrived sick and starving, were less capable of contributing to the American economy, and were unable to adapt to American culture"

Jews, Slavs, Italians, etc. also were seen this way.

I'd be interested for a reporter to ask Rubio if he thinks that Jews, Poles, Italians, Greeks, and others haven't contributed to the American economy and haven't been able to adapt to American culture, as proponents of the Immigration Act of 1924 argued.

Well, it IS all the Greeks’ (or Macedonians’) fault that Cincinnati Chili exists!

More seriously, the Southern and Eastern European immigrants were thought too weird and too Catholic when they first arrived. But a hundred years later, they are “mainstream” Americans and most have intermarried to the point where their descendants are listing off half of this and a quarter of that. I bet many of them don’t think of themselves as anything but culturally Catholic/Orthodox (or Jewish), so much for “Christendom!”

Immigrants tend to assimilate unless there is tremendous pressure for them not to. I know that Woke 1 didn’t like the term “melting pot” but that’s just what America is, ideally.

There's a lot Rubio DIDN'T say, including that ancient Athenian social norms kept women confined to the home and absent from public or political life. How stupid of him to perform in that totally transparent manner. The irony is... Marco Rubio will not be remembered by history as significant in any form. He's a political whore and Trump is his pimp. Same for JD Vance who heaped high praise on Rubio's speech and added his own threat aimed at the EU. And as for selling military goods to Greece... well, they may regret it when Trump tells them to 'bend over' and take it in the bum for America.
