Fantastic podcast! So far, I think not wanting a limited amount of "junk food" within SNAP benefits is a red herring from the right-wing. The left in general is the side of following the statistics and facts. In this case, supposedly, the facts show that low-income people are harmed by their choices such as buying soda, but they are going to do that regardless unfortunately. So, including it in SNAP has been shown to do two things, one, it motivates some parents who wouldn't otherwise claim or use SNAP benefits, and this benefits their kids in two ways as well. First it allows them to be fed and not hungry and therefore healthier and better rested which leads to the second. The second is that they then learn better because they are less hungry. Having kids learn better is a core element of fighting against tyrannical rightwing extremism. They know that. That's why they're attacking SNAP. Obviously, junk food, on the surface, by common sense, shouldn't be provided or really consumed ever. But let's be real, that's not the world US citizens, especially the poor, live in.
